4G and 5G only: Australia will completely shut down its 3G network this year
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has announced a complete shutdown of 3G networks across the country.

TPG Telecom (aka Vodafone) has already shut down its network, while two other operators plan to do so in 2024, with Telstra shutting down its network on 31 August and Optus shutting down its network in the coming days.
The ACMA has reminded users of 3G devices that their phones will no longer be able to send messages or make calls, including to emergency number 000. In addition, older 4G devices that have been using the 3G network for voice calls may also be affected. ACMA recommends that such users contact their operator.
By the way, apart from mobile phones, tablets, smart watches, bank terminals, medical alarms and other 3G-enabled personal emergency response solutions will also stop working. The Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) has urged users to take action now and upgrade to newer solutions to avoid service interruptions. Australia also has an official free recycling programme for old gadgets. Old devices will have to be discarded once 3G is switched off.
