Unfortunately, this commercial result had significant consequences for Volition, the studio behind the franchise. In 2023, Volition announced its closure, marking the end of a 30-year journey in game development.
Although it was a reboot with fresh characters, setting and tone, it was rumoured that old favourites such as Shondi, Dex, Aisha and Johnny Gath were initially considered for the game but were ultimately ruled out in favour of a reboot.
