NASA engineers manage to resuscitate 47-year-old Voyager 1 space probe

NASA's 47-year-old Voyager 1 space probe, which is the farthest from Earth, has resumed operations after seven months of technical problems. In November 2023, the probe began sending unreadable data, prompting NASA engineers to launch an investigation.

Here's What We Know

After a thorough investigation, the NASA team determined that the problem was caused by memory corruption in the probe's Flight Data Subsystem (FDS) computer. Thanks to the intervention of engineers, two of Voyager 1's scientific instruments were able to send data again. All four instruments are now working properly and sending accurate data back to Earth.

Details

"Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 is one of the most distant man-made objects from Earth. It continues to explore interstellar space, sending back valuable information about this uncharted environment. The probe's return to service after technical problems is a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of NASA engineers, as well as the invaluable data it collects.

Voyager 1 is expected to continue operating for several more years, sending data back to Earth. This data will help scientists to better understand the nature of the interstellar medium, as well as the evolution of our solar system.
