1Password simplifies setup on new devices and adds "recovery codes"

1Password has announced a significant simplification of setup on new devices, as well as the introduction of "recovery codes" to give users a last chance to regain access to their accounts in the event of a loss of credentials.

Flashback

1Password is a password manager that helps users create, store, and securely use strong passwords for their online accounts. It is available for various platforms, including macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android.

Here's How It Works

The new setup system, which will be rolled out over the next few months, will use a QR code for the new device and a subsequent confirmation step on the original device. This eliminates the need to enter a secret key, email, and other information, making the process more user-friendly.

1Password claims that this new method is still extremely secure as it avoids the need for credentials and establishes an encrypted channel between devices to set up the new device. The QR code is also a one-time use.

Recovery codes

In addition to simplified setup, 1Password also adds "Recovery Codes". These codes provide users with a backup way to regain access to their accounts even if they have lost their credentials.

How To Switch It On

To create a recovery code, you need to log in to your 1Password account and save the code in a safe place. After that, if you lose your credentials, you can use the code to regain access to your account and create a new password. The code is reusable, but you will need to verify your email to complete the process.

The new setup process will be available in beta over the next few months, and the Recovery Codes are already live.
