Linux kernel developers have reduced the support period for LTS (Long Term Support) releases from 6 to 2 years. Google, in response, announced that they will continue to support the last 2 LTS kernel releases for 4 years.
Why It Matters
- The Linux kernel is the backbone of Android, and keeping it up to date is critical to the security of devices.
- Extending the LTS support period will provide Android users with longer protection against new threats.
- It will also help OEMs keep their devices up to date for longer.
Google will focus on supporting the last two LTS kernel releases for 4 years. This means that devices released this year will receive security updates until 2028 or 2029, depending on the kernel version.
This is a positive step for Google and for Android security. Extending the LTS support period will help protect billions of Android devices worldwide.
