Proton Mail releases Scribe: secure artificial intelligence for email writing
Proton Mail has introduced a new AI-powered feature that will help them compete with the AI tools offered by Google and Microsoft in their email services.
Here's What We Know
Proton Scribe is an AI-powered writing assistant that helps you draft and improve your emails.
Scribe is designed with privacy in mind: the assistant cannot learn from data in the inbox, as Proton Mail uses zero-access encryption. Proton also does not store or record any data from draft emails.
According to Proton, the writing assistant was one of the most requested features users asked for in a recent survey. The company developed it as a safe alternative to other generative AI models.
Scribe can be run locally if your system is compatible. Otherwise, you can run it on Proton servers without registration. The assistant is based on open source models and code.
Here's How It Works
You can access Scribe by clicking the pencil icon in the Proton Mail editor. After telling the tool what you want to say in your email, it will create a draft. You can use the Shorten and Edit options to compress and clean up your draft. You can also make your email tone more formal with the click of a button. You can review and customise your drafts before sending them.
Proton reports that Scribe currently only fully supports English. The company is introducing an assistant for eligible users.
Visionary and Lifetime plan holders will have access to it at no additional cost. Users of Proton Business - Mail Essentials, Mail Professional, or Proton Business Suite plans can try Proton Scribe for free for 14 days. After that, the tool will cost US$3 per month per customer.
