Apple has been granted a patent for a next-generation hinge for a potential foldable iPhone or iPad
Apple has been granted a new patent for a hinge for foldable devices that can be used in smartphones, tablets, laptops and even wearable devices.
Here's What We Know
The patent describes a series of interlocking links formed from connected "fingers" and a friction clutch. A key feature is the use of crescent-shaped slots that allow each link to rotate relative to the others, which moves the axis of rotation beyond the link itself. This ensures smooth and balanced folding of the unit with just the right amount of friction. The hinge also includes synchronising gear plates that ensure that both sides of the hinge rotate evenly.
Apple has previously been reported to be working on a foldable iPhone and larger foldable devices such as the iPad and MacBook, but has faced technical challenges in developing the display and mechanical components. The new patent could help the company overcome these challenges and improve the durability and functionality of its future foldable devices.
