Google has started testing a new experimental feature called Ask for Me, which allows Google Search users to make calls to businesses using artificial intelligence. The feature is currently available through Search Labs and works with car repair shops and beauty salons.

Here's How It Works

Users can turn on Ask for Me in Search Labs and search for queries such as "oil change nearby" or "manicure nearby". The system will automatically make a call and provide information on prices and availability of services.

In the case of car services, Google first clarifies what kind of service the user is looking for: scheduled maintenance, oil change, tyre balancing, fuel or air filter replacement, etc. Next, you need to specify the car's details: year of manufacture, make, model and mileage, as well as select the desired service time - the fastest availability, weekdays only or weekends only.

Next, Google will call local companies in a natural voice, get the necessary information, and create a summary of prices and availability of services. In about 30 minutes, the user will receive a response via text message or email. During the call, AI informs the interlocutor that an automated system is being used. Businesses can refuse to receive such calls if they do not want to interact with artificial intelligence.

Google notes that Ask for Me uses Duplex technology, which it applies to restaurant reservations on Google Search and Google Maps. The feature has a limit on the number of requests, so a waiting queue may be created.
