Indonesia has purchased two MPCS/PPA multifunctional warships built by the Italian company Fincantieri for the Italian Navy.

Here's What We Know

The ships, formerly called Marcantonio Colonna and Ruggiero di Lauria, were renamed KRI Brawijaya (320) and KRI Prabu Siliwangi (321). They became the largest surface combatants of the Indonesian Navy.

The fifth and sixth units of the MPCS/PPA class were sold to Indonesia for €1.18 billion. These ships were originally built for the Italian Navy under a programme that started in 2015 and included the purchase of seven ships of this project.

The ships have a displacement of 6,270 tonnes, a length of 143 metres and a beam of 16.5 metres. They are equipped with a diesel-gas turbine power plant and can reach a speed of over 31 knots. Armament includes 16 Aster-15/30 anti-aircraft missiles, the TESEO anti-ship system, 127-mm and 76-mm guns, two 25-mm combat modules and torpedo launchers. The range is 5,000 nautical miles, with a crew of 173.

The first ship in the series, Paolo Thaon di Revel (P430), was commissioned in 2021, the second in 2022, the third in 2023, and the fourth, Giovanni delle Bande Nere (P433), in 2024. KRI Brawijaya (320) and KRI Prabu Siliwangi (321), the fifth and sixth ships of the project, were launched in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Indonesia is not the first country to buy ships built for the Italian Navy. In 2020, Egypt purchased two FREMM frigates for $1.3 billion.
