Apple has announced changes to the taxation and pricing of apps and in-app purchases in the App Store for a number of countries. These changes take effect from 6 February 2025 and are designed to take into account new tax regulations and currency fluctuations.

The main changes are:

  • Azerbaijan: Introduction of a value added tax (VAT) of 18 per cent
  • Peru: Introduction of an 18 per cent VAT
  • Slovakia: Increasing the standard VAT rate from 20 per cent to 23 per cent and introducing a reduced VAT rate of 5 per cent for e-books.
  • Estonia: Increasing the reduced VAT rate from 5% to 9% for news publications, magazines and other periodicals
  • Finland: Increasing the reduced VAT rate from 10% to 14% for e-books.

In addition, as of 1 April 2025, tax law changes will come into effect in Japan under which Apple will act as a Special Platform Operator and will independently collect and remit 10% Japanese Consumption Tax (JCT) for all paid apps and in-app purchases sold by developers not based in Japan.

Developers are advised to check out the details on the official Apple Developer site and make changes to their apps and pricing policies if necessary.
