At the dawn of the Xbox One, the famous Japanese studio PlatinumGames made a deal with Microsoft to develop an ambitious fantasy action game Scalebound, in which the player must control not only a stylish protagonist, but also his tamed dragon.

Every trailer attracted huge attention of the public, and statements of game director Hideki Kamiya were so loud and ambitious that Scalebound became one of the most anticipated games of its time. In the end, the story ended sadly: in 2017, Microsoft cancelled Scalebound due to numerous problems in the organisation of work and overestimation of its capabilities on the part of developers.

Here's What We Know

Xbox head Phil Spencer has repeatedly stated that the cancellation of Scalebound was one of the biggest mistakes of his career and it seems that Hideki Kamiya is of the same opinion.

The Japanese game designer has reposted a piece in which he shares his regrets that his team never managed to release Scalebound. Kamiya accompanied the repost with a short but meaningful plea: "Phil, let's do it!".

Of course, the likelihood of Phil Spencer going back into development on Scalebound is minimal, and Hideki Kamiya himself has been out of PlatinumGames since 2023. He founded his own studio Clovers and is currently working on the Okami sequel for Capcom. But it should be noted that Scalebound had a huge potential, which with modern technology is much easier to realise and who knows, maybe Phil Spencer will hear Kamiya's call and respond to it with an agreement.
