Something Wicked Games, a studio founded by Skyrim and Fallout veterans, has faced financial difficulties, forcing them to rethink the concept of their ambitious project Wyrdsong. Initially conceived as an open-world RPG, the game is now being transformed into a roguelike due to a reduced team and limited resources.

Here's What We Know

Wyrdsong was announced at Gamescom 2022 as an open-world role-playing game set in medieval Portugal, exploring the origins of the Knights Templar. After an initial investment of $13.2 million from NetEase, the studio was unable to raise additional funding, which led to significant staff reductions. According to the studio's co-founder, Jeff Gardiner, the team was severely reduced, and most employees were forced to look for other jobs.

In response to these challenges, the developers decided to change the direction of the game by adding roguelike elements. Since the game was originally intended to explore the themes of life and death, this change naturally fit into the overall concept. Gardiner noted that they took everything that had been created and repurposed it for the new game format.

Currently, the team continues to work on Wyrdsong with a reduced team, actively seeking additional investment or a publisher to complete the project. Gardiner emphasised that despite the difficulties, they are committed to completing the game using the resources and experience available.
