Xiaomi overtakes Apple in wearable device sales ahead of Apple Watch Series 7 launch
The market researchers' report said that Xiaomi overtook Apple in the smartwatch market in the second quarter - albeit by a small margin. As a result, Xiaomi found itself in first place, Apple in second place, followed by Huawei and Fitbit, with Samsung rounding out the top five.
How many sold?
According to the report, Xiaomi shipped 8 million wearable devices in the second quarter compared to Apple's 7.9 million devices. Timing clearly plays a role here, with Canalys noting that Xiaomi launched a new model during the quarter, while Apple Watch fans aren't expecting the Series 7 until later this month.
How was the count?
Canalys further separates so-called "basic devices," like the low-cost Fitbit and Xiaomi models, from more sophisticated smartwatches. Apple continues to lead the latter market with a 31.1% market share - no other brand even comes close.
All other players have single-digit shares, from second place Huawei at 9% to Xiaomi at 5.7%.
