Ukrainian hacker who stole MacBook Pro blueprints arrested in US
U.S. Department of Justice officials have arrested a Ukrainian hacker in Poland who was involved in stealing blueprints for a MacBook Pro laptop with an M1 Max processor and extorting $50 million from Apple.
Yaroslav Vasinsky was arrested earlier this year along with a hacker from the REvil group. They infiltrated Apple's network and stole blueprints for the new MacBook Pro. Vasinski was arrested in Poland. He is currently awaiting extradition to the US, where he faces up to 115 years in prison.
In April REvil hacked into the network of Quanta, one of Apple's key partners. There, the hackers discovered blueprints of the MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, which Apple unveiled later this fall. Thanks to the hack, the media learned some details about the laptops long before the release, such as that Apple would increase the screen size.
REvil then demanded $50 million from Apple for the remaining blueprints of the yet-to-be-announced products. A few days later, they removed all Apple-related documents and statements from their website.
The FBI also put a second member of the REvil cyber gang, Russian Evgeny Polyanin, on the wanted list. He is accused of illegally obtaining $13 million through more than 3,000 hacking attacks on US company computer networks. In the United States, he faces up to 145 years in prison.
