AI godfather Geoffrey Hinton has called for the prevention of a machine uprising
One of the so-called godfathers of artificial intelligence, Geoffrey Hinton, has called on governments to step in and see to it that machines do not take control of society.
Here's What We Know
"Before AI is smarter than us, I think the people developing it should be encouraged to put a lot of work into understanding how it might try and take control away," the scientist said.
Hinton warned that the risks of AI should be taken seriously. It is not science fiction, he said, but a real threat.
"We need to figure out in advance how to deal with it [risk]"
Hinton is also concerned that AI will deepen inequalities. The huge productivity gains from its introduction will benefit the rich, not workers, the scientist believes.
In addition, he pointed out the dangers of fake news written by bots like ChatGPT. Hinton hopes that in the future, AI content will be labelled in the same way that central banks label cash.
