UN Human Rights Council calls for transparency on artificial intelligence
The UN Human Rights Council has called for transparency on the risks of artificial intelligence and the responsible use of data collected through AI.
Here's What We Know
The human rights body passed a resolution calling for "adequate explainability" AI-assisted decisions, taking into account "human rights risks arising from these technologies". The document also calls for international law to be followed.
The resolution was adopted unanimously by the 47 member countries of the council. However, China and India rejected the consensus, expressing some "points of contention."
South Korean Ambassador Yun Seong-deok said the resolution emphasised the importance of "ensuring, promoting and protecting human rights throughout the life-cycle of artificial intelligence systems".
US Representative Michele Taylor called the resolution a step forward for the Council.
British ambassador Simon Manley said London was "deeply concerned by the use of technology to curtail human rights, including freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly" as well as non-interference in privacy.
