Samsung Electronics continues to reduce production of memory chips, including NAND flash memory used in smartphones and PCs.
Here's What We Know
The memory chip division reported an operating loss of $3.4 billion (4.36 trillion won) in the second quarter of 2023. In the past six months, operating losses totalled about $7bn.
However, Samsung plans to double its production of high-performance high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips by 2024 due to high demand for artificial intelligence.
HBM is used in AI, 5G, Internet of Things (IoT) and graphics applications. This type of memory offers faster data processing and lower power consumption compared to traditional NAND.
