NVIDIA has created three new artificial intelligence chips designed specifically for the Chinese market to circumvent recent US restrictions on the export of such technology.
Here's What We Know
Last year, the US banned shipments of a number of powerful NVIDIA chips to China for fear of military use. The company responded by developing the A800 and H800, but the new rules place a limit on the processing power of the chips that can be exported.
According to media reports, NVIDIA's new HGX H20, L20 and L2 models for China do not exceed that limit. Although they may lack performance compared to the banned chips, so consumers may need more accelerators.
China is actively developing its own semiconductors to avoid imports in the future. For now, however, NVIDIA's customers prefer its solutions because of its reputation and AI software.
According to sources, the new chips are expected to be announced and start selling by the end of 2022. This will allow NVIDIA to maintain its presence in the Chinese market and keep its current contracts worth $5bn.
