Meta and IBM have founded the AI Alliance, a group promoting the concept of open innovation in artificial intelligence, to counter the closed approach of Google, Microsoft and OpenAI.
Here's What We Know
According to IBM vice president Darío Gil, proponents of open AI are in favour of an approach that is "not proprietary and closed". Above all, they are talking about the public availability of the underlying technology, source code and knowledge in the field.
Earlier, Meta's CTO Yann LeCun criticised OpenAI, Google and Anthropic for lobbying for rules of AI development that benefit them. In his opinion, the future of the technology should be built on open scientific exchange.
IBM believes that adherents of the closed approach are deliberately fuelling panic around open source innovation in order to secure a competitive advantage. The EU and the US are already debating this topic in the context of AI regulation.
Forty companies and organisations have joined the alliance, including AMD, Intel and Sony.
