A group of 11 non-fiction writers, including Pulitzer Prize winners, have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft for alleged copyright infringement in using their works to teach the language models underlying ChatGPT.

According to the plaintiffs, the defendants receive billions of dollars in profits from the misuse of books for the development of artificial intelligence technologies. At the same time, the authors receive no compensation or recognition of their rights.

Attorneys for the writers claim that OpenAI downloaded their works and other materials on the Internet without permission to teach the GPT language model. In addition, they argue, Microsoft is also liable because it actively participated in the development of the technology.

The lawsuit seeks monetary compensation in an unspecified amount and a cessation of copyright infringement.

Previously, other copyright holder groups have made similar claims. OpenAI and Microsoft have denied the allegations.
