OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is in talks with major investors to raise billions of dollars to launch a massive project to create a network of semiconductor chip fabs for artificial intelligence.

Here's What We Know

According to sources familiar with Altman's plans, he has held meetings with the likes of G42 and SoftBank Group. The project involves collaboration with leading chipmakers and covers the creation of fabs on a global scale.

It is estimated to involve raising tens of billions of dollars needed to build and operate such high-tech production facilities.

Altman himself believes that the industry should already have sufficient AI chip production capacity to meet the growing demand by the end of the decade. Since the release of ChatGPT, demand for AI solutions has skyrocketed.

Intel, TSMC and Samsung are currently the leaders in chip manufacturing. They are seen as potential partners for OpenAI.

At the same time, US lawmakers are calling for tighter controls on technology co-operation with a number of foreign companies, including G42, citing national security risks.
