ChatGPT violates EU data privacy rules, says Italy

Italy's Data Protection Authority (DPA) has concluded that OpenAI's popular chatbot ChatGPT is not compliant with the GDPR, the EU's main privacy regulation.

Here's What We Know

According to the Italian regulator's investigation, ChatGPT collects users' personal data on a massive uncontrolled basis. This information is then used to train language models, the DPA believes.

In addition, according to the supervisory authority, ChatGPT may generate inappropriate content for underage users.

OpenAI has 30 days to provide counterarguments. If found in violation of GDPR, ChatGPT developers face a fine of up to 4% of global revenue.

In March 2023, Italy had already shut down the chatbot in the country. Four weeks later, OpenAI complied with the regulators' demands and ChatGPT's work was restored.
