A team of researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) has unveiled AiSee, a wearable assistive device that helps visually impaired people "see" their surroundings using artificial intelligence.

Here's What We Know

AiSee consists of three components:

  • A camera to capture the user's field of vision;
  • An AI-based image processing unit;
  • A bone conduction sound system that allows sound to be transmitted through the bones of the skull.

To use AiSee's cues, you simply need to hold an object in your hand and activate the built-in camera to trigger the recognition process. The device will then identify the object and voice the response by transmitting sound directly to the auditory bone.

Unlike its analogues, AiSee works autonomously and does not require connection to a smartphone. Also, its compact size allows the device to be worn discreetly.

Now the team of scientists plans to test AiSee with visually impaired people. This will help improve ergonomics and performance before bringing the device to the mass market.

Experts hope that the innovative gadget will help visually impaired people become more independent.
