Sweden will not develop the sixth-generation Tempest fighter - Stockholm has officially left the GCAP programme
Sweden has decided to officially leave the GCAP (Global Combat Air Programme). The Scandinavian country will not develop the sixth-generation fighter with the UK, Japan and Italy.
Here's What We Know
The United Kingdom, Japan and Italy may be joined by Saudi Arabia. Sweden, on the other hand, is leaving the project. But at this point it is not known what the Scandinavian country intends to do next.
It is possible that Sweden will launch its own programme. Earlier Stockholm financed the Flygsystem project. Its result was to be a fifth-generation fighter to replace the latest Gripen configuration in the middle of the next decade.
The GCAP programme should also give a fifth-generation fighter in 12 years' time. The UK and Italy will be able to replace Europe's Eurofighter Typhoon jets, while Japan will be able to retire the Mitsubishi F-2.
