It's official: the next Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarine will be called the USS San Francisco
The US Navy has chosen a name for the future Virginia-class nuclear-powered submarine. The sponsor of the ship became Nancy Pelosi.
Here's What We Know
The future nuclear-powered submarine with the shipboard number SSN 810 will be named USS San Francisco. This was announced by US Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro on 3 October 2023.
USS San Francisco (SSN 810) will be the fourth ship named in honour of San Francisco. The first ship is a cruiser that participated in the Spanish-American War and served in the North Sea during WWI.
The second ship named in the city's honour is a heavy cruiser that participated in operations and battles off Cape Esperance, Guadalcanal, Guam, the Marshall Islands and Okinawa in World War II. Its crew received 17 battle stars, a Presidential Unit Citation, four Medals of Honour and 32 Navy Crosses.
Finally, the third ship is the Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered submarine, SSN 711. After being decommissioned last year, she serves as a training ship for the Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit in Charleston, South Carolina.
