Regulators in Chile approved the deal between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard: they do not see it as a threat to the video game industry
Following Saudi Arabia, Brazil and Serbia, the deal between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard was approved by the Chilean state regulatory commission.
Here's What We Know
According to information posted on the official website of the regulator, the Chilean Commission does not see any danger from the merger of the two giants for the gaming market as a whole, or for Chilean consumers in particular.
According to members of the commission, there are so many strong companies in the video game industry that Microsoft does not have the potential to monopolize the industry.
They cite Electronic Arts, Take Two, Ubisoft, Epic Games, Sony and Nintendo as the dominant developers, which together provide consistently high competition and, in their view, would not be affected by a Microsoft and Activision Blizzard merger.
Well, Chile's approval is good, but the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and EU and UK regulators are taking an extremely close look at the potential implications of the deal, and so far do not share the views of their Chilean counterparts.
