Amazon wins $100 million bid from Netflix for crime thriller starring Chris Hemsworth and Pedro Pascal
Amazon has won the rights to "Crime 101" starring Chris Hemsworth and Pedro Pascal.
Here's What We Know
Earlier this week, it was revealed that the film "Crime 101" would enter a $100 million battle between Amazon and Netflix. The rights battle is now complete.
According to The Playlist, Amazon won the bid, offering around $90 million for the film, down from the $100 million originally reported. Interestingly, Netflix supposedly offered more money for the picture, but producers chose Amazon as the latter promised a theatrical release, while Netflix demanded a reworking of the script.
Although not much is known about the details of the film "Crime 101", but just the information about its cast is already generating interest. The crime thriller will be based on Don Winslow's novel of the same name, with the plot revolving around the hunt for a jewellery thief near the Pacific Coast who has gone unsolved for years because he lives by a strict code he calls Crime 101. Police link the thefts to Colombian cartels, but Detective Lou Lubeznik's intuition tells him it's all the work of one man. Now a lone jewel thief has his eyes on the legendary final score, and Lou breaks all the rules of Crime 101.
It's understood that the film features two main characters, Detective Lou Lubesnik and the jewellery thief he's trying to catch, and Pascal and Hemsworth are expected to play one of them. It's not yet clear who will play which role, but the thriller promises to be exciting thanks to two strong actors in the lead roles.
Production of the film will now continue with Amazon, but that doesn't guarantee that filming will begin anytime soon, amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.
According to sources, there is a possibility that Hemsworth may drop out of the project. The actor has previously talked about wanting to take a short break from acting to spend time with his family after discovering that he was genetically predisposed to developing Alzheimer's disease during an episode of his National Geographic documentary series Limitless.
Although it has yet to be confirmed, Hemsworth's departure from "Crime 101" would be a major blow to a film that depends on strong lead stars for its success. With Amazon continuing production, hopefully Hemsworth will stay on the project.
When We Can Expect It
