Here's What We Know

The novel, written by MacDonald in 1957, has twice been the basis for film adaptations of Cape Fear: in 1962 with Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum and Polly Bergen, and in 1991 with Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte and Jessica Lange. The latter's box office receipts topped $182 million worldwide, with $35 million invested.

Things are now looking like the novel will be brought to life again, but this time in the world of television, thanks to producers Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, who are currently pitching the concept of a Cape Fear series to Hollywood studios.

According to Deadline, there could be a real rights battle brewing around the idea, as Spielberg and Scorsese are joining forces for a TV project for the first time.

We're sure the streaming platforms are already rubbing their hands together. Peacock, Apple TV+, Hulu, Netflix and MAX are all rumoured to be interested in the rights to stream the project.

The project will be directed by Nick Antosca, known for his work on "Channel Zero" and "The Act" from Amblin Television and Universal Content Productions.

The series is a tense modern thriller that explores the American fascination with true crime in the 21st century. The plot centres on a pair of married lawyers who are faced with hardship when a sinister killer from their past is released from prison after years in jail.
