The developer from Nightdive Studios told us about the difficulties the studio faced when developing Star Wars: Dark Forces Remastered
One of the developers from Nightdive Studios, Max Waine, in an interview with PCGamer, told what challenges and problems the developers face while working on the Star Wars: Dark Forces.
Here's What We Know
According to Wayne, one of the difficulties in porting the game to modern systems was the game's use of its own interpretation of technologies that later became the industry standard. He describes the game as "heavily reworked" and says that the original developers created their own version of multitasking to ensure the game's stable operation:
"Dark Forces has been difficult to change, from the technical end of things, because it is very heavily over-designed. There were a lot of small details in how LucasArts did things at the time that made stuff particularly difficult. They managed to do multi-threading effectively, using a task system in the mid-1990s. We had to use sophisticated modern techniques to be able to get it to work nicely, while keeping the same basic idea."
Wayne says that by having access to the original source code, the studio was able to overcome these difficulties and adapt the game to modern systems.
