Developers warn: Tomb Raider I-III Remastered contains racial and ethnic stereotypes
The Tomb Raider I-III Remastered compilation has been released, featuring three updated versions of the iconic Lara Croft games with all their add-ons.
The re-release is available on all platforms, including Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck.
Here's What We Know
It's been 28 years since the first Tomb Raider game was released, in that time some of society's rules have changed and things that were previously overlooked are now not welcome in society. Such content is also present in Tomb Raider, so in the updated trilogy the developers from Crystal Dynamics added a small disclaimer about racial and ethnic stereotypes:
The games in this compilation contain offensive depictions of people and cultures based on racial and ethnic prejudice. These stereotypes are deeply harmful, inexcusable, and inconsistent with Crystal Dynamics' values.
Rather than remove this content, we have chosen to present it here in its original form, unaltered, in the hope that we can recognise its harmful impact and learn from it.
Like any work of fiction, the Tomb Raider games are a product of their time and we would like to commend the developers for not being opportunistic and leaving the trilogy as it was intended by the creators at Core Design.
