The first details of an ambitious Star Wars strategy game from the developers of XCOM and Civilisation have been revealed
Bit Reactor, a studio founded by former Firaxis Games employees (developers of XCOM and Civilisation), has been working on an ambitious strategy game based on the Star Wars universe since 2022.
Aside from Electronic Arts cancelling the game as part of a restructuring, nothing has been reported about it.
Finally, the developers gave a small interview to PCgamer portal, in which they shared at least some information about the game not even presented yet.
Here's What We Know
Bit Reactor employees said that they are trying to give their game a unique visual language (gameplay design term), similar to the one that was developed together with Respawn for the action game Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
In the design of Survivor actively used elements of star maps, they were in the interface, design of locations and menus, and in the development of its strategy game Bit Reactor wants to do the same, but not to repeat what has already been in the framework of other works on Star Wars.
In their article, PCgamer journalists emphasise that the developers prefer not to call the game an RTS, so there is a possibility that gamers are expecting a turn-based strategy game, like Civilization. In addition, the game designers noted that they will pay more attention to controlling the game with keyboard and mouse, because strategies are more popular on PC than on consoles, but at the same time the unnamed game can be played with a gamepad.
I think people have a limited idea of what a strategy game can be. That's one of the things we want to do: expand people's understanding of what a strategy game actually is.
