Two bridges, two artificial islands and one underwater tunnel: China opens $1.5bn Shenzhen-Zhongshan highway, 7 years in the making

China has opened the 24-kilometre Shenzhen-Zhongshan highway.

Here's What We Know

It was built for seven years. The project cost the Chinese government 1.5 billion dollars.

The road includes two bridges, two artificial islands and one underwater tunnel. The latter is 6.8 km long and 46 metres wide. The tunnel is constructed of reinforced concrete pipes in a steel casing. It is the largest construction of this type in the world.

The new motorway connects cities with a population of more than 85 million people. Thanks to it, the road between the cities of Shenzhen and Zhongshan will be reduced from 2 hours to less than 30 minutes. By the way, the first Chinese electric SUV BYD YangWang U8 drove along the motorway.
