The US Army has ordered a large batch of 33g Black Hornet 3 reconnaissance nano drones worth $94m

The US Army wants a new batch of Black Hornet 3 miniature reconnaissance-level drones. This was reported by the company Teledyne FLIR.

The amount of the agreement between the US Army and the manufacturer was almost $94 million. The number of drones is not specified. The contract is for five years.

Teledyne FLIR is positioning the Black Hornet 3 as a Personal Reconnaissance Systems (PRS). The company believes the US Army's investment in Black Hornet will exceed $225 million by 2028.

The service became interested in nano drones several years ago. The US Army started buying Black Hornet 3 in 2018 as part of the Soldier Borne Sensor project. Over the course of five years, it has invested more than $125 million to acquire the drones.

The Black Hornet 3 allows units to enhance intelligence and surveillance capabilities. Weighing 33g per nano drone, it can stay in the air for nearly half an hour and transmit real-time video.

In addition to the US, more than 40 countries are Black Hornet operators, including Ukraine, the UK and Norway. The latter recently ordered 1,000 personal reconnaissance systems. In total, Teledyne FLIR has delivered more than 20,000 drones to customers.
