The latest S-350 "Vityaz" SAM system with a range of up to 60 km was spotted in Russia: it was adopted for service in 2020 as a replacement for the Buk-M1-2 and S-300PS
The Russians have shown the latest S-350 "Vityaz" surface-to-air missile system, the development of which ended three years ago.
What we know
The work on this anti-aircraft missile system began in 2007. Six years later, the S-350 "Vityaz" passed its first test. One year after the completion of development, the SAM entered service with the Russian army.
The S-350 Vityaz is used to destroy aerodynamic and ballistic targets up to 60 km away. One launcher contains 12 missiles. The medium-range surface-to-air missile system is to replace the older Buk-M1-2 and S-300PS SAMs.
As we noted above, the S-350 Vityaz can destroy enemy targets at a range of 60 km. This applies to aerodynamic targets. The kill zone at altitude is up to 30 km. In case of ballistic targets, the anti-aircraft missile system has a kill zone of 30 km in range and 25 km in height.
