Spain buys THeMIS robotic battle tank
The Spanish army has decided to purchase an Estonian THeMIS robotic tank, developed by Milrem Robotics.
What we know
The Spanish Ministry of Defense wants to evaluate the effectiveness of ground drones and understand how they can strengthen the country's Armed Forces. Milrem Robotics believes that such robots can become as popular as drones.
The Estonian robot is equipped with a hybrid engine that is low-noise during operation. It has a maximum payload of 1,200 kg. The modular design allows for quick equipment changes depending on mission objectives.
The THeMIS has a tracked chassis and can reach speeds of up to 20 km/h. The weight of the robotic tank is 1,630 kg. The base vehicle is equipped with a stretcher, equipment boxes and a toolbox. Optionally the tank can be equipped with light weapons (ADER, defender, MSI-DS Terrahawk, PROTECTOR). Also available is a Hero-120 modification with six kamikaze drones that have a 3.5 kg warhead and can stay in the air for 60 minutes.
The robot received an infrared camera with military-standard protection MIL-STD-810G. Twelve countries have previously bought the tank. Seven of them are members of NATO. Spain became the 13th user of the robotic THeMIS.
