Ukrainian Armed Forces destroyed a launcher of rare $100m Russian SA-17 Grizzly missile defence system

We recently wrote about the destruction of the Russian Buk-M1 surface-to-air missile system (NATO codified as SA-11 Gadfly). Now it is time to pay attention to Ukraine's more rare and expensive air defence system.

Here's What We Know

The 129th Territorial Defense Brigade was able to detect a 9A317 launcher of the Buk-M2 surface-to-air missile system (NATO codification: SA-17 Grizzly) using an unmanned aerial vehicle. Which weapon was used for the attack is not specified. But it is known that the system was found using a Ukrainian-made Leleka-100 reconnaissance drone.

SA-17 Grizzly is designed to intercept aircraft, helicopters, drones and cruise missiles. In addition to the launcher, the complex includes a command and control center, a detection and target designation station, and a radar station.

SA-17 Grizzly is capable of shooting down fighters at a radius of up to 50 km and cruise missiles at a range of up to 26 km. Target velocity should be no more than 1.1 km/s towards and 300-400 m/s in pursuit. Reaction time is 4 msec. It takes about 5 minutes to deploy the system.
