UAE allocated more than $2 billion to buy 96 missiles for THAAD air defense system
The government of the United Arab Emirates wants nearly a hundred missiles for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system.
What we know
The United Arab Emirates have allocated $2.25 billion for the purchase. Under the contract, the United States will supply 96 missiles for THAAD, fire control stations and related hardware. The reason for such a decision was the fact that the UAE's neighbours are beginning to increase their military power. In particular, we are talking about Iran.
The United Arab Emirates is the first customer of THAAD systems outside the United States. Now the system is already being used in South Korea, Israel and Guam, and in a few years it will be deployed in Saudi Arabia.
By the way, the United Arab Emirates can boast a powerful air defense system. In addition to THAAD, they have the American MIM-104 Patriot PAC 3 and the Russian "Pantsir-S1". South Korea has also signed a contract for the supply of South Korean air defense systems Cheolmae known as KM-SAM.
