Germany Shows Leopard 2A7 Tank with Israeli Active Protection System Trophy ASP
The German company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann brought its latest Leopard 2A7 tank with an Israeli protection system to the exhibition in the Czech Republic.
Here's What We Know
The fighting vehicle was demonstrated at the NATO Days 2022 event, which took place last weekend in the city of Ostrava. This is how the Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is trying to promote the Trophy ASP to the European market.
The side of the tank bears flags of states that are Leopard 2A7 operators: Germany, Austria, Denmark, Greece, Finland, Hungary, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Canada, Chile, Indonesia, Bahrain and Singapore.
Trophy ASP is an active tank protection system introduced in 2005. Its alternative name is ASPRO-A, which is an acronym for Armored Shield Protection - Active. The armor was able to repel a shot from an anti-tank guided missile without a warhead as part of a test in 2010.
The system includes a detector that can detect where the tank is being fired from. The onboard computer then calculates the trajectory and commands the device to destroy the munition on approach to the fighting vehicle.
The Trophy ASP uses Elta's EL/M-2133 radar stations. They are responsible for detecting and identifying missiles or rocket-propelled grenades. The stations also activate the launchers which launch the interceptors to destroy the ammunition.
