The authors of Genshin Impact told how they create new characters

An update 2.4 was recently released for Genshin Impact, and with it two new heroines - Shen He and Yun Jin. The last of the pair became especially interesting because it represents to the whole world a piece of Chinese culture, which is the homeland of miHoYo. The team is proud of their work, so they released a documentary about how they create characters. 

Yun Jin is a geographer and part-time opera singer with Li Yue. Players will get to know her during the story quest and even listen to her performance.

• According to the developers, the idea of ​​Yun Jin appeared in the early stages of work on the plot. And its 3D model was ready in 2018, but before the release of 2022 it had to be finalized.
• The heroine was immediately conceived as an artist, and the word "opera" represented her from the very beginning.
• Then the screenwriters began to weave Yun Jin into the plot: they made friends with certain characters and came up with the story of the character.

• The character is based on a combination of tradition and innovation. The developers tried to reflect this in the character and appearance of Yun Jin. For example, the heroine performs classical opera, but she also likes rock music.
• The girl's outfit includes elements of opera costumes, but does not look too whimsical. According to the artists, such a decision made Yun Jin more accessible to gamers.
• The unusual design of the singer made 3D artists sweat. For example, hair and a cape created difficulties in drawing movements, and bright makeup in the first tests stretched ugly when blinking.

• The animators honestly admitted that at the beginning of the work on Yun Jin, their knowledge in the field of opera was insufficient.

  • In the process of studying the topic, they realized that the source of inspiration can be traditional static opera poses: "These are short but strong movements, and there is a feeling of pause. They not only create the image of the character, but also become bright moments ".
  • The chain of blows of the heroine is a whole show - the beginning and end of each attack corresponds to going on stage or leaving it.
• Another difficulty was the combination of the girl's fighting style and her profession. At the heart of Yun Jin's gameplay is the accumulation of energy and the next powerful blow. The team tried to make the singer's attacks look strong but elegant.

Soon in  Genshin Impact there will be a holiday event - Lee Yue will celebrate the Sea Lantern Festival. During the event, players will be able to earn valuable prizes, including the opportunity to win one free four-star character from Li Yue. Yun Jin is also on the list of heroes.
