And things are still there: smartphones of the Redmi Note 11 line received all the same problematic proximity sensors

For a long time, the "Achilles heel" of many Xiaomi smartphones has been proximity sensors, due to incorrect operation of which the screen during telephone conversations either goes out or turns on at an unnecessary moment. Unfortunately, the Redmi Note 11 lineup seems to inherit this issue.

What's wrong?

Xiaomi announced last year that it intends to get rid of this problem by ditching the Elliptic Labs sensors that many complained about. Instead, they promised to install Minhao Sensing sensors, which should have corrected the situation.

However, instead, all four models of the Redmi Note 11 family received sensors manufactured by Elliptic Labs, which the company itself has already boasted in press release:

“Xiaomi has been using and trusting Elliptic Labs’ trusted technology since 2016. Xiaomi is kicking off this year by rolling out our AI-powered virtual proximity sensor to four smartphone models (Redmi Note 11, Note 11S, Note 11 Pro and Note 11 Pro 5G). Replacing hardware sensors with AI Virtual Smart Sensor Platform software from Elliptic Labs allows you to optimize costs and create solutions that are safe for people and the environment, while eliminating current supply chain risks. This makes Elliptic Labs an ideal partner for global smartphone manufacturers such as Xiaomi.”

The statement says Elliptic Labs' AI virtual proximity sensor provides reliable proximity detection without the need for a dedicated hardware sensor. By replacing hardware sensors with software sensors, the AI-powered virtual proximity sensor lowers device cost and eliminates sourcing risks.

Well, we can only hope that the virtual proximity sensor with artificial intelligence from Elliptic Labs will correctly cope with its duties.
