Steam reveals 2022 sale dates and discount policy changes

Valve has announced the dates for all Steam sales that will take place in the first half of 2022. Including a big summer sale in July and also making some changes to its sale policy that will make life a little easier for developers and give gamers the opportunity to grab more games.

First up, the upcoming list of seasonal and themed Steam sales:

Large:

  • Steam Next Fest: Attention to Upcoming Games with Playable Demos - February 21-28.
  • Steam Next Fest: more upcoming games, more demos - June, exact dates to be confirmed.
  • Summer Sale on Steam: Big Summer Extravaganza on Steam - June 23rd - July 7th.

Thematic sales:

  • JRPGs: JRPG titles showcased at this event (March 14-21)
  • SimFest - Hobby Edition: for games that turn hard work into fun. Want to try your hand at a new career or hobby without years of training or a ton of expensive gear? These are your games. (March 28 - April 4)
  • Die-Much: Die, repeat and die again. Some progression is usually present, but not always. Games with Roguelike, Roguelite, Metroidvanias or Souls-like core game mechanics. (May 2-9)
  • Race: driving, flying, swimming. Things that run fast in competition, whether on wheels, in the water or in the air. (May 23-30)
  • Survival: guard your territory, collect food and repel ruthless death. This event is for games focused on surviving as long as possible. (July 18-25)

This is not a complete list of Steam events that will take place in the first half of the year. Valve said it will be running more themed sales throughout 2022 "to shed light on the many exciting themes and genres that are common on Steam", as well as regional sales and others hosted by external groups for events such as PAX and Gamescom.

Valve also makes changes for developers, which she hopes will "make rebate eligibility more predictable and provide more opportunities to participate throughout the year." Under current rules, there must be a six-week recovery period between discounts on games, aside from large seasonal sales; Starting March 28, this recovery time will be reduced to 28 days, excluding seasonal sales.

For gamers, this means that games can be on sale more often throughout the year, and thus there will be more opportunities to get a lot of games at a bargain price.
