Sony's ambitious plan: the company plans to release 10 games-services by 2026
During today's report to investors, Sony said it plans to release more than 10 new game services by March 2026. It's an extremely ambitious plan that marks a major expansion of Sony's PlayStation games beyond traditional console exclusives.
The company revealed its plans this morning in its earnings report, confirming that the recent Bungie acquisition, developer of Destiny 2, will help other studios achieve impressive results in multiplayer games. CFO Hiroki Totoki said that the PlayStation studios "will be learning from Bungie" and that Sony is "strongly willing" that Bungie is "ready to work closely with us."
However, it does not say what kind of games they might be. It's likely that one of them is the new Bungie IP, which has been described as a multiplayer action game.
The only thing known is The Last of Us 2 multiplayer. Naughty Dog is already known to be developing several games, and as of September 2021, The Last of Us online mode has been confirmed to still be in development, with recent job listings suggest that the long-awaited multiplayer mode could be free.
Given the 2026 timeline, it's likely that most of these games will target the PS5 and not the PS4.
