vivo X Fold arrives with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, flagship cameras
The vivo X Fold has arrived to join the rapidly growing Chinese folding market.
There are no surprises as we have been well-conditioned to anticipate the many leaks that occurred over the week leading up to the event. The vivo X Fold has a 6. 53-inch outer AMOLED display and a folding 8. 03-inch 1800x2200px LTPO3 inner AMOLED E5 display. Both operate at up to 120Hz and are HDR10+ ready, but the inner display is an LTPO3 and can slow down to as low as 1Hz.
The folding display uses SCHOTT UTG (ultra-tough glass), a competitor to Samsung’s ultra-thin glass. The display has Display Mate’s A+ recommendation. There are two in-display fingerprint scanners on the vivo X Fold. Both are ultrasonic scanners, not optical ones.
This hinge is aircraft-grade and floating wing hinge. It allows the vivo X Fold to close flat, and to stay open at an angle between 60 and 120 degrees.
Powering the vivo X Fold is a flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip with 12GB of RAM. There’s a 4,600mAh battery that can recharge rapidly. You get 66W through the cable – that tops up the battery in 37 minutes. The vivo X Fold can also wirelessly charge at up to 50W and reverse wirelessly charge at 10W at the same time.
The cameras are flagship-grade, especially when compared to the Samsung Galaxy foldables. There’s a 50MP f/1. 8 main camera with OIS in front of a 1/1. 57-inch Samsung GN5 sensor, a 12MP f/2. 4 2x (47mm) zoom camera, a 5x periscope zoom camera (with 60x digital zoom), and a 48MP f/2. 2 114-degree ultrawide. Further, the Zeiss brand on this camera module indicates that vivo is business with these imagers. Zeiss modes include Texture Portrait, Motion Capture 3.0, Zeiss Super Night Scene, Zeiss Nature Color and more.
There are two cameras for selfies on the X Fold – one is on the inside, and the other on the exterior.
You can have two apps running side by side on the larger canvas of the inner display. You can run floating windows above for a richer multitasking experience. There’s also a waist-level viewfinder which splits the screen in an L-shape to show the camera viewfinder while shooting at waist level. You can also use this mode to take long-exposure shots with the vivo X Fold on a flat surface.
The vivo X Fold will go on sale in China. It’s available in Black, Blue, and Grey and starts at CNY 11,999 (INR 1,43,300, EUR1,735, converted). The higher-specced model is CNY 12,999 (INR 1,55,000, EUR1,880, converted).
