AMD Radeon RX 7000 series could support DisplayPort 2.0 with 16K image output
AMD will release the Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards later this year. There are already a lot of rumors about them, and new data indicate that these accelerators will receive support for DisplayPort 2.0. Information about this was found in open source AMD drivers. There, the company began rolling out fixes for DisplayPort 2.0 Ultra-High-Bit-Rate (UHBR) certification.
In particular, AMD points to the DisplayPort UHBR20 mode, which means an interface bandwidth of 80 Gbps. That's 32 Gbps more than HDMI 2.1 and 48 Gbps more than double that of DisplayPort 1.4a. This bandwidth in theory allows you to output a 16K image with DSC compression, 10K without compression, or output two 8K HDR images at 120 Hz simultaneously.
At the moment, there are no available monitors with DisplayPort 2.0 on the market - the launch was delayed due to the pandemic last year. But it looks like the first products supporting this standard are just around the corner.
