Researchers made a mask that simulates suffocation in virtual reality

Modern technologies of virtual reality do not yet allow you to fully immerse yourself in the virtual world. In fact, VR now involves only sight and hearing. Even treadmills to "walk" and gloves to "touch" a virtual object have not yet left the prototype stage. But a team from the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences in Austria has unveiled a mask called AirRes that allows you to enhance the experience by using the wearer's breath.

The mask covers the wearer's nose and mouth and simulates suffocation and lack of air. For example, the user is flying a fighter jet in virtual reality and making a sharp turn, in which case the mask will reduce the air supply. Also, the authors of the development position it as a system for training firefighters - this way you can simulate smoke and lack of oxygen.

The mask has another mode - you can blow out virtual candles or play the harmonica. Also, when shooting from a virtual sniper rifle or bow, you will have to hold your breath at the time of the shot so that the sight does not go astray.

It is not yet reported whether the developers plan to create a commercial version of AirRes. The existing prototype is said to be compatible with VR headsets such as the Meta Quest 2.
