The first road with wireless charging for electric vehicles will appear in the USA

Next year, Detroit will reveive a road that provides wireless charging for electric vehicles. The Israeli company Electreon is behind the next-generation road, which plans to complete construction as early as 2023.

The test road will be only one mile (about 1.6 km) long. It is known that charging induction coils connected to an electricity grid and will be located under the road. To receive power, electric vehicles will need a special receiver - by analogy with smartphones. The system will not operate without an active receiving device within reach and will be safe for others. It will receive a modular design and if the road is damaged, the work will not stop - each coil is connected to the mains in parallel.

How much power an electric car will receive will depend on the design of the car itself and how fast it is moving. Of course, the road will not be able to fully charge the battery, especially at such a short distance, but it is able to provide a little energy, enough to get to the nearest charging station.

According to an Electreon spokesman, it would be optimal to place the charging coils under the lanes allocated for public transport, since traffic moves here predictably and regularly. In addition, the system can be useful in places with frequent traffic jams - you can recharge the battery while standing in a traffic jam. In this case, charging will not be free - the user will receive an invoice for payment.
