Apple today kicked off its annual WWDC developer conference, where it unveiled the iOS 16 operating system for smartphones.
What's New?
- A completely new and fully customizable lock screen can now be customized to your taste: install dynamic widgets, 3D images, create multiple lock screens and switch between them. Notifications now start at the bottom of the screen and can be easily hidden. So-called "live notifications" make it easy to keep track of events in real time, such as playing music or exercising. Focuses filters allow users to filter out distracting content within apps, such as tab groups in Safari, calendar events, or conversations in Messages.
- Sent messages in iMessage can be edited, deleted, and marked as unread. SharePlay has also been enhanced, including the ability to start a session in Messages.
- The new dictation feature allows you to convert speech to text in real time. Moreover, punctuation marks and emoticon recognition are automatically added to messages, including through Siri. The new App Intents API allows Siri Shortcuts to get started without any configuration.
- Live Text is now extended to video, allowing users to recognize text in videos.
- The Wallet app now allows users to exchange keys via message. Apple Pay Later is a new service that allows users to pay in four installments over six weeks without interest or fees. Apple Pay Later is available with every Apple Pay purchase.
- Apple Maps has been expanded to include many more countries and cities around the world. Users can plan up to 15 stops in advance, plan a trip on a Mac and send it to an iPhone, and add stops to a trip using Siri.
- Apple TV can now display sports game information through Live Activity. Apple News allows users to follow their favorite teams and leagues for a special viewing experience. The new sports features are available in the US, UK, Canada and Australia.
- Family Sharing includes easier ways to manage your kids' accounts, including faster ways to set age limits and set up new devices. And the shared family library displays all the photos taken by family members. All participants have equal rights, and photos will be displayed in everyone's memories and widgets.
- iOS 16 includes new privacy and security features. Security Review is a new section in Settings for viewing and editing any access granted to other users, allowing you to quickly manage and revoke access, reset privacy permissions, protect access to messages, and stop sharing location data.
- The interface in the Home application has changed.
- iOS 16 also includes spatial audio improvements with AirPods.
The iOS 16 public beta will be available in July. The update will be available for iPhone 8 and newer smartphones.
