The Garmin Edge 1040 Solar, the company's first solar-powered bike computer, was introduced this week and may endure up to 100 hours between charges. “With its cutting-edge, integrated rechargeable battery and color touchscreen display, the Edge 1040 Solar is ready to take you anywhere without requiring an electrical outlet,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales. “The Edge 1040 Solar is the pinnacle of GPS bike computers because it delivers durable, accurate performance across all weather conditions and terrains. The Edge 1040 Solar is prepared for any excursion – from remote gravel paths to epic climbs – no matter where you ride or what type of bike you choose.”

The Edge 1040 Solar includes Firstbeat AnalyticsTM insights like VO2 max, recovery time, training load, training focus, and more to help cyclists fine-tune their performance. 2 They can even get daily workout ideas based on their current level of activity and VO2 max. The Edge 1040 Solar enables riders to monitor how their body responds in various conditions while riding with heat and altitude acclimation as well as receiving in-ride notifications when it's time to refuel or rehydrate.

Furthermore, the Edge 1040 Solar display calculates remaining climbs and grades for each route, allowing riders to see their performance on the climbs after riding it. Meanwhile, mountain bike data such as jump count, jump distance, hang time, grit and flow track the amazing specifics of every journey. The new Garmin Edge 1040 Solar will retail for £629 in the UK and $749 in the USA, there is also a non-solar model which will cost £519.99 and $599.
