This is how always-on-display wallpapers will look like on iPhone 14 Pro
In terms of the new display, iPhone 14 Pro rumors are now pretty solid, with a new design and likely an always-on mode. And while previously iOS 16 versions had numerous references to a new always-on function, even the system's wallpapers have been updated to take advantage of this innovative technology.
If you've never heard of an always-on display, this technology allows the system to keep displaying information on the screen while using very little battery power. Some Android devices now have always-on displays, as do Apple Watch Series 5 and later models.
Before WWDC 2022, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reported that iOS 16 will include a new always-on mode, which is anticipated to be available only on iPhone 14 Pro models. That's because this year's devices will feature a faster variable refresh rate screen with a refresh rate of 1Hz per second or less. As a consequence, it should require less power than current displays. 9to5Mac discovered several references to always-on display support in iOS 16, which backs up all the iPhone 14 Pro speculations. There's even an internal mode at Apple that it uses to test out always-on functionality on the iPhone 13.
The function of displaying information on the always-on display on Android smartphones is similar across the board. You'll get a black screen with the time and widgets. It's become quite apparent that iOS 16 will include a new lock screen, as Apple has already announced plans for such an update. The news might not be as good for iPhone 14 Pro. 9to5Mac discovered that the system wallpapers in iOS 16 beta 4 are now prepared for this new always-on display functionality. We previously stated that iOS 16 no longer features static images as wallpapers. Rather, real-time multi-layered vectors are used to create the new wallpapers.
In addition to the basic vectors, the native wallpapers (such as the original and most recent clown fish wallpaper) now have a new status called "Sleep," which has dark and faded components. Wallpapers in this condition are rather similar to Apple Watch faces with always-on functionality. The wallpaper will change to the "Sleep" version when the iPhone 14 Pro's screen is switched off.
Basically, it looks like the iPhone 14 Pro will replicate the same effect as the Apple Watch. This implies that when you turn off your screen, you'll still be able to see your wallpapers in some manner. When the user taps the screen or presses and holds down the Power button, the wallpaper will be shown at full brightness. Of course, on a genuine device, even while off, users can choose their own clocks and widgets to view.
