F/A-18F Super Hornet and F-35 Lightning II fighters test next-generation AGM-88G missiles

The U.S. Navy has begun testing a new-generation radar-guided missile. It is called the AGM-88G or AARGM-ER.

Here's What We Know

The missile is designed to eliminate enemy air defense systems. It is capable of detecting the radar signal of an anti-aircraft missile system and then strike. Note that the AGM-88 series of missiles appeared in the 1970s and became especially popular due the war in Ukraine, as the Armed Forces were able to integrate the AGM-88 HARM into Soviet MiG-29 fighters.

The next-generation missile received an improved engine. However, the U.S. military has not yet disclosed either the launch range or the maximum speed of the missile. The development of AGM-88G has not yet been completed, but the combat version of the missile is to enter service with the Navy in fiscal year 2023. In the U.S., it begins Oct. 1, 2022, and runs through Sept. 30, 2023.

The AGM-88G will be tested by many U.S. fighters, including the EA-18G Growler and the fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II. So far, however, the missile has only been seen under the wing of the F/A-18F Super Hornet. It has a yellow head.
